Rejuvenative Farming – Beyond Sustainability
Rejuvenative farming aims to restore oneness to the fragmented web of life.
Conventional farming deals with depleted soils through the heavy use of chemical fertilizers. Unhealthy plants also call for increased use of pesticides and herbicides. Working with dead soils, this leads to a cycle of dependency on artificial inputs, which we are then eating in the crops produced. The organic farming movement improved on this by using only organic, natural inputs. Unfortunately, many organic farms follow the same concepts of conventional farming – growing in dead soils through a reliance on regular inputs, often trucked from a distance instead of being sourced locally.
Soil with both the humus structure and the microbial life to inhabit that structure then create the perfect environment for robust, healthy, nutrient-rich plant life.
Greenhouse growing helps feed from 4 to 20 times the number of people that an outdoor farm of the same size can. Greenhouses also shield plants from pests and other natural predators, as well as erratic weather, which can destroy significant portions of outdoor crops.
